Are large-breed dogs more aggressive?

On Behalf of | Jul 1, 2025 | Dog Bites & Attacks

People often think that large dogs are more aggressive and more dangerous. A parent may not want to get certain breeds, for instance, because they don’t want those dogs around their children. They’re worried about the children’s safety, so they may choose a smaller breed of dog that they don’t think will cause harm.

Often, this perspective comes from the fact that most dogs involved in fatal attacks are large-breed dogs. These include Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Huskies and other mixed-breed dogs of similar sizes. It is true that these larger dogs are involved in more serious attacks, but does that also mean that they are more aggressive?

Smaller breeds show more aggressive traits

What some studies have actually found is that there are more aggressive traits in smaller dogs. The larger breeds that people tend to be worried about are often more likely to be gentle or docile. It is the smaller dogs that show more signs of aggression to those around them, perhaps because their small size makes them nervous that they could suffer harm, so they’re just trying to protect themselves.

The difference, however, is that these dogs are less likely to cause serious injuries. For instance, someone may have a Chihuahua that barks aggressively at every person who visits the house and tries to nip at their feet or their ankles. This dog is very aggressive, but it’s unlikely to be able to hurt a visitor. A Pit Bull, on the other hand, is much more likely to be calm, but the breed is so large and powerful that, if it ever does decide to attack, it can lead to severe injuries and even death.
